MISSION APPROACH
Our Mission Approach:
Returning to The Way
The Foundation: The Four Pillars of One UMI
Our work is guided by four foundational values that ensure every project is sustainable, ethical, and impactful.
-
Partnership: We don't arrive with our own agenda. We follow the lead of local pastors, community leaders, and organizations who understand their people's needs best.
-
Transparency: We believe in radical financial and operational honesty. Our participants and donors know exactly where every dollar goes.
-
Impact: We prioritize tangible, long-term transformation over temporary fixes. Whether it’s construction or medical care, we build for the future.
-
Unity: We bridge the gap between cultures and denominations. We are one body working toward a common goal of restoration.
At One United Missions International (One UMI), we believe that true service isn’t about being "saviors"—it’s about being partners. Our approach is built on the philosophy of "Returning to The Way," focusing on holistic care for the mind, body, and spirit while working hand-in-hand with local leaders.
Our Standard Operating Expectations (SOE)
To maintain the highest level of integrity and safety, all One UMI projects adhere to our Standard Operating Expectations. These are the "best practices" that keep our missions professional and respectful:
1. Cultural Humility:
We enter every community as learners and guests, respecting local customs, traditions, and authority.
2. Relational Focus:
Tasks are important, but people are the priority. We make time for "sitting at the table" and building real friendships.
3. Sustainable Development:
We provide tools and resources that empower the community to continue the work long after we leave.
4. Holistic Care:
Our missions address the whole person. We don’t just fix a roof; we support the physical health and spiritual well-being of the family beneath it
What This Means for Our Teams
When you join a One UMI project, you aren't just a volunteer; you are a Mission Partner. You will receive pre-trip training on cultural sensitivity, logistical support for "In-Country" operations, and the opportunity to engage in work that truly lasts.
Why "Returning to The Way"?
Modern missions can often become focused on dogma or "check-the-box" service. We are reclaiming a simpler, more authentic model of service modeled after the early church:
· Rejecting the Savior Complex: We acknowledge that we are not the heroes of the story; we are the hands and feet.
· Action Over Dogma: We let our service speak for our faith. We lead with love, providing medical aid, construction, and education to anyone in need.
· Empowerment, Not Dependency: Our goal is to work ourselves out of a job by strengthening local leadership and infrastructure.
The Seven Standards of Excellence
One United Missions International (One UMI) is committed to the following benchmarks to ensure our work is God-honoring and community-centered:
1. God-Centeredness
Our primary focus is the glory of God and the advancement of His Kingdom. We seek His guidance in every project, ensuring our motives remain pure and our actions reflect His character.
2. Empowering Partnerships
We do not work for a community; we work with them.
-
We build healthy, interdependent relationships with local hosts.
-
We prioritize the long-term goals of the local leaders over our own short-term project desires.
3. Mutual Design
The best projects are collaborative. We ensure that the mission's objectives are co-created with the host community, ensuring that the work is actually needed and can be sustained locally.
4. Comprehensive Administration
Integrity in the "boring" details matters. This includes:
-
Financial Transparency: Clear accounting and honest reporting.
-
Risk Management: Proper insurance, background checks, and safety protocols.
-
Legal Compliance: Respecting the laws of the countries where we serve.
5. Qualified Leadership
Every One UMI team is led by individuals who are trained in cultural humility, conflict resolution, and the technical aspects of the mission (whether medical, construction, or pastoral).
6. Thorough Preparation
We don't just send people; we prepare them. Our participants undergo training that covers:
-
Cultural Sensitivity: Understanding the "hidden" rules of the host culture.
-
Spiritual Readiness: Aligning their hearts with the "Returning to The Way" philosophy.
-
Logistical Clarity: Understanding the $1,500 budget and "In-Country" expectations.
7. Appropriate Follow-Through
The mission doesn't end when the plane lands back in the States.
-
Debriefing: Helping participants process their experience.
-
Evaluation: Gathering feedback from our local hosts to improve future trips.
-
Ongoing Support: Maintaining the relationship with the host community year-round.
Why These Standards Matter
By adhering to these Standards of Excellence (SOE), One UMI avoids the common pitfalls of short-term missions, such as creating dependency or causing unintentional harm to local economies. Instead, we foster a cycle of mutual growth and lasting transformation.
